Dunn was born in Texas in 1846. His father was a farmer and his mother was a Cherokee Indian. Dunn grew up on the frontier, and he learned to ride horses and shoot guns at a young age. In 1866, he joined the United States Army and served in the Indian Wars. After the war, he returned to Texas and worked as a cowboy.
In 1873, Dunn moved to New Mexico Territory. He soon became involved in the Lincoln County War, a range war between two rival factions of ranchers. Dunn fought on the side of the McSween faction, and he was present at the Battle of Lincoln, one of the bloodiest battles of the war. After the war, Dunn continued to work as a cowboy and a lawman. He also served as a sheriff of Lincoln County.
In 1880, Dunn married Mattie Goss. The couple had three children. Dunn continued to work as a lawman and a rancher until his death in 1917. He was 71 years old.
Dunn was a complex and fascinating figure. He was a man of courage and adventure, but he was also capable of great violence. He was a product of his time, and he lived a life that was both exciting and dangerous. Dunn's story is a reminder of the challenges and opportunities that faced the men and women who settled the American West.
