About the Author
Eli Smith (1801-1857) was an American author, diplomat, and missionary. He was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, and graduated from Yale College in 1821. After graduation, Smith studied theology at Andover Theological Seminary. In 1826, he was ordained as a minister in the Congregational Church.
In 1827, Smith was appointed as a missionary to the Middle East by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. He arrived in Beirut in 1829, and spent the next several years traveling throughout the Holy Land and Syria. In 1833, Smith was appointed as the American consul in Beirut. He served in this position until 1842.
Smith was a prolific writer, and he published several books and articles about his travels and experiences in the Middle East. His most famous work is Travels in Palestine and Syria, which was first published in 1841. Smith's writings are still considered to be valuable sources of information about the history and culture of the Middle East.
