The Irish have a long and distinguished history of involvement in New York City politics. From the early days of Tammany Hall to the present day, Irish Americans have held some of the city's highest offices.

One of the most famous Irish American politicians was Fiorello La Guardia. La Guardia was born in Italy to Italian parents, but he grew up in New York City and identified as Irish American. He served as mayor of New York City from 1934 to 1945, and he is widely considered to be one of the city's greatest mayors.

Another prominent Irish American politician was Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Moynihan was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but he moved to New York City as a young man. He served as a United States Senator from New York from 1977 to 2001. Moynihan was a brilliant intellectual and a leading expert on social policy.

The Irish have also played a major role in New York City's business community. Irish Americans have founded some of the city's most successful companies, and they have held leadership positions in many of the city's largest corporations.

One of the most successful Irish American businessmen was John D. Rockefeller. Rockefeller was born in upstate New York to Scottish-Irish parents. He founded Standard Oil in 1870, and he went on to become one of the richest men in the world.

Another prominent Irish American businessman was Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie was born in Scotland, but he moved to New York City as a young man. He founded Carnegie Steel Company in 1892, and he went on to become one of the wealthiest and most influential men in the United States.

Chapter 3: Artists

The Irish have also made significant contributions to New York City's arts scene. Irish Americans have been prominent in all areas of the arts, from painting to sculpture to music to literature.

One of the most famous Irish American artists was James Joyce. Joyce was born in Dublin, Ireland, but he spent much of his adult life in New York City. He is best known for his novel Ulysses, which is considered one of the greatest works of literature in the English language.

Another prominent Irish American artist was Francis Bacon. Bacon was born in Dublin, Ireland, but he moved to London as a young man. He is best known for his paintings of human figures, which are often characterized by their distorted and grotesque forms.

Chapter 4: Athletes

The Irish have also made a significant contribution to New York City's sports scene. Irish Americans have been prominent in all major sports, from baseball to basketball to football to hockey.

One of the most famous Irish American athletes was Babe Ruth. Ruth was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Irish parents. He played for the New York Yankees from 1920 to 1934, and he is widely considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time.

Another prominent Irish American athlete was Joe DiMaggio. DiMaggio was born in Martinez, California, to Italian parents. However, he grew up in New York City and identified as Irish American. He played for the New York Yankees from 1936 to 1951, and he is widely considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time.
