Making your own hammock is a fun and rewarding project that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. This beginner's guide will walk you through the entire process, from gathering your materials to hanging your finished hammock.
Materials
- 2 pieces of fabric, each measuring 7 feet long and 4 feet wide
- 1 piece of dowel rod, 6 feet long
- 2 pieces of rope, each 10 feet long
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
Instructions
- Fold one piece of fabric in half lengthwise and sew the two long edges together. This will create the body of the hammock.
- Fold the other piece of fabric in half lengthwise and sew the two short edges together. This will create the head and foot of the hammock.
- Insert the dowel rod into the opening at the top of the body of the hammock. The dowel rod should be long enough to extend beyond the edges of the fabric by about 6 inches on each side.
- Tie one end of each rope to the outside edge of the dowel rod, about 6 inches from the end. Tie the other end of each rope to the outside edge of the fabric at the head and foot of the hammock, about 12 inches from the end.
- Hang your hammock from two trees or posts. The distance between the two hanging points should be about 10 feet.
Tips
- Use a strong fabric for your hammock, such as canvas or denim.
- Make sure to sew the seams securely.
- If you don't have a dowel rod, you can use a sturdy branch instead.
- If you're hanging your hammock from trees, be sure to use tree straps to protect the bark.
- Enjoy your new hammock!
