About the Book

Real War True Friends Unlikely Heroes is a gripping and inspiring account of the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of three unlikely comrades: a young American soldier, a Vietnamese interpreter, and a North Vietnamese soldier.

The story begins in 1968, at the height of the war. Private First Class John Riley is a recent high school graduate who has been drafted into the Army. He is sent to Vietnam and assigned to a reconnaissance unit. One day, while on patrol, Riley's unit is attacked by a group of Viet Cong guerrillas. In the ensuing firefight, Riley is wounded and his comrades are killed.

Riley is left alone and stranded in the jungle. He is eventually found by a Vietnamese interpreter named Nguyen Van Lam. Lam takes pity on Riley and helps him to safety. The two men form an unlikely bond, and they soon become close friends.

One day, Riley and Lam are captured by a group of North Vietnamese soldiers. The North Vietnamese soldiers are initially hostile, but they eventually come to respect Riley's courage and determination. Riley and Lam are eventually released, and they return to their respective units.

The war continues to rage, and Riley and Lam are both wounded in action. However, they both survive the war and return home. They remain close friends for the rest of their lives.

Review

Real War True Friends Unlikely Heroes is a powerful and moving story about the human cost of war. The book is well-written and engaging, and it provides a unique perspective on the Vietnam War.

The characters in the book are well-developed and believable. Riley is a relatable protagonist, and Lam is a complex and sympathetic character. The North Vietnamese soldiers are also portrayed in a nuanced way, and they are not simply one-dimensional villains.

The book is full of suspense and action, but it also has a strong emotional core. The story of Riley and Lam's friendship is truly inspiring, and it shows that even in the darkest of times, there is hope.

Real War True Friends Unlikely Heroes is a must-read for anyone interested in the Vietnam War or in stories of courage, camaraderie, and sacrifice. The book is a powerful reminder of the human cost of war, but it also offers a message of hope and redemption.
